Artist Statement

From my beginnings in Art Education at UBC, I have explored a variety of media--ceramics, textiles, painting and graphics. My interest has been to incorporate what I have discovered in each medium into my paintings. My early work focused on soft sculpture and fibre art, and I have for several years now, returned to the idea of exploring patterns and textures—in both choice of subject and use of media.

Currently, a West Coast theme looms large in my work. I'm drawn to the solace of the woods and to its soothing environment. Quiet forest paths are a respite from a loud world, and bathing in the multi-sensory experience, for a short while at least, escapes the world's cacophony. When painting these scenes, I intensify colours and emphasize textures. I sometimes choose nonstandard canvas sizes to enhance different aspects of an image. Regardless of subject or process, my aspiration is to look at unusual things with unusual eyes.

Background

I am a longtime resident of the North Shore of Vancouver, Canada. I enjoy hiking with my husband on the many trails both at home and elsewhere in the world. As a longtime member of the North Shore Artists' Guild (five years on the board) and the Federation of Canadian Artists, I have had the opportunity to exhibit in many shows both on the North Shore and at the Federation Gallery on Granville Island. I achieved my signature membership status (AFCA) from the Federation of Canadian Artists in 2022.
